::::: Health Problems associated with Chlorine :::::

Hello AquaSmarter,  It was such a pleasure to talk with you yesterday. Like a drink of pure water! I have been thinking about the information on the website and how vitally important it is that people know about the dangers of chlorine and that there is a safe, pure alternative.  I like to think that I am fairly well educated about health and nutrition and we try to live by holistic principles in our daily lives.  We have a Reverse Osmosis system in place for our drinking water because we knew that we didn't want to be drinking chlorine and fluorine in treated water.  I knew that these chemicals were undesirable and cause problems in the human body but in my ignorance I did not know how dreadfully serious these problems could be. That was, until I found your website.

I have 3 kids and have been deeply concerned the last few years about the chlorine levels at the public pools.  Every time we would go to the pools, even the outdoor ones, the stench from the high chlorine treatments was almost unbearable.  This is certainly magnified in the indoor pools.  My 11 year old son, who loves to swim the most, has always had such a hard time after going to the pool.  He would inevitably get sick after every visit with bronchitis type symptoms.  Once again, in my ignorance, I honestly thought that it was from the germs in the locker room.  But now I am convinced it was from the chlorine.  I have decided my kids won't be subjected to that again.

So last week we bought an above ground swimming pool.  I figured this way I could control the amount of chlorine in it.  But when it came time to put the chlorine in I had this overwhelming feeling to wait, not do it.  So instead I got on the internet and started looking for alternatives to chlorinating.  That was when I found your AquaSmarter website.  I started reading and couldn't hardly stop!  Finally I had the information I had been looking for.  It was very liberating to have the knowledge and understanding of what this chemical does.  To not be ignorant of the dangers and damage caused.  To know how to protect my children from it.

Thank you for your perseverance and dedication to educate, inform, and make AquaSmarter available to humanity.

Sincerely,  Karen Hodge

MY QUESTION FOR ALL OF US IS, "WITH TECHNOLOGY APPROACHING THE 22nd CENTURY, WHY ARE WE STILL ALLOWING THE CHEMICAL COMPANY'S TO MAINTAIN THEIR CONTROL OVER OUR 'HEALTH AND OUR FAMILIES LIVES?"  YOUR DECISION TO CHOOSE A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE AND ADDING YOUR VOICE FROM THIS TYPE OF FORMAT WILL CERTAINLY BRING CHANGE TO THE REST OF THE WORLD.   THANK YOU DR. MERCOLA http://v.mercola.com/QA/Chlorine-Alternative-for-Pool-or-Hot-Tub-2880.aspx) FOR YOUR WELCOMED VOICE AND OPINION.!

"Without a doubt, the statistics you allude to on your web site are, as far as I know, accurate. The cancer risk among people using chlorinated water is 93% higher than those whose water does not contain chlorine, and chlorine has now been linked to miscarriages and heart disease as well.   Last month, in testimony to this, I happened to submerge myself in our chlorinated pool for literally 3-seconds. Not fully realizing the risks, I thought it would be fun to prove that I was “macho" since the water temperature was still a bit chilly. A couple of days later, to my shock and amazement, upon viewing my live blood under dark-field microscopy, it was obvious that my normally healthy blood cells had suffered conspicuous free-radical damage from that one incidental exposure to Chlorine. How dare we expose ourselves, our children and our grandchildren to such a toxic nightmare?  There is no doubt in my mind, that the widespread use of chlorine in our modern day water supply is a time-bomb about to go off. If nothing else, it opens the opportunity for a huge class action law suit to be brought to forward."  Dr. Z

Dear AquaSmarter, I came upon your web site. What you say is very impressive. I am one of the people you mentioned that is allergic to chlorine. I have to filter my drinking water, cooking water, and shower water. However, I still wonder how good a job these filters do.  I was a lifeguard for about 5 years when going to college. After I graduated, I became very ill and have had health issues ever since including fatigue and increasing numbers of allergies. I believe my extensive chlorine exposure as a child (everyday at the public pool in the summers and life guarding during college plus decades of drinking municipally-chlorinated water) has played a significant role in my health problems. Sadly, it has taken years to figure this out!  I want to thank you for developing your product. It will help keep people healthy and save the environment while also saving money. Sincerely, Rebecca

Hello Carmen,

This is the exact circumstances. I lived in a condominium community in 1984  that had an Olympic size swimming pool. The association approached me to see if I would take over the handling of the pool care as they had heard from other sources I was very good at this. I did not have time but told them I would train someone to do the job if they liked. They chose a young navy man and we immediately struck up a friendship that lasted for years. They were ordering chlorine from several companies (not a good idea) and storing them in the same room. The chlorine was granular (against my recommendations).  The young man (again against my recommendations) was mixing the powder with water before throwing it into the pool. One bucket was empty and he filled the remaining chlorine needed from another bucket. I don't remember the exact chlorines but both were granular. When he put the water in the bucket to mix it the bucket became very hot instantly and he threw it down and ran.   (I had cautioned him several times about any changes in chlorine to immediately get away from it).  My home was around two blocks from the resulting
explosion and it shook my house. It sounded like two or three stick of dynamite had gone off. He did not do that again and fortunately no one was in the pool area except him. Paul

Problems with using CHLORINE...

http://www.azco.bc.ca/8x6/IE/info/chlorine.htm

Acute (short-term) exposure to high levels (>30 ppm) of chlorine in humans results in chest pain, vomiting, toxic pneumonitis, pulmonary edema, and death.  At lower level, (<3 ppm), chlorine is a potent irritant to the eyes, the upper respiratory tract, and lungs.  Chlorine of 5 ppm caused respiratory complaints, corrosion of the teeth, inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose, and increased susceptibility to tuburculosis.

  • Chlorine is a potent irritant in humans to the eyes, the upper respiratory tract, and the lungs. Several studies have reported the following effects: 0.014 to 0.054 ppm: tickling of the nose; 0.04 to 0.097 ppm: tickling of the throat; 0.06 to 0.3 ppm; itching of the nose and cough, stinging, or dryness of the nose and throat; 0.35 to 0.72 ppm: burning of the conjunctiva and pain after 15 minutes; above 1.0 ppm: discomfort ranging from ocular and respiratory irritation to coughing, shortness of breath, and headaches. (4)

  • Higher levels of chlorine have resulted in the following effects in humans: 1 to 3 ppm: mild mucous membrane irritation; 30 ppm: chest pain, vomiting, dypsnea, cough; 46 to 60 ppm: toxic pneumonitis and pulmonary edema; 430 ppm: lethal after 30 minutes; 1,000 ppm: fatal within a few minutes. (3)

  • Chlorine is extremely irritating to the skin and can cause severe burns. (3)

  • Acute animal tests, such as the LC50 test in rats and mice, have shown chlorine to have high acute toxicity. (5)

  • EPA'sOffice of Air Quality Planning and Standards, for a hazard ranking under Section 112(g) of the Clean Air Act Amendments, considers chlorine to be a "high concern" pollutant based on severe acute toxicity. (6)

Respiratory effects of exposure to chlorine vapors during a swimming pool accident

When inhaled, chlorine is a highly irritating gas that can damage larger airways as well as distal lung structure. We examined the short-term respiratory effects of acute chlorine inhalation during a swimming pool accident. On October 22, 1998, an emission of chlorine vapors occurred in the chlorinating maintenance procedures room of a recreational center in Rome. A total of 282 subjects (134 children) inhaled hydrogen chloride and sodium hypochlorite. Most people received bronchodilators and cortisone at the emergency room; five children were hospitalized. A telephone follow-up was taken on 260 (92.2%) subjects to obtain information about duration of exposure (less than 3 minutes, 3-5 minutes, more than 5 minutes), intensity of exposure (not at all/a little, a fair amount, a lot), and acute respiratory symptoms. A total of 236 (90.7% of the target) individuals underwent clinical examinations, which took place 15-30 days after the accident. Lung function was measured in 184 people (82 children) after 15-30 days. A multiple linear regression was run to test the association between chlorine exposure and lung function, separately in adults and in children. Acute respiratory symptoms occurred among 66.7% adults and 71.6% children. The incidence rates were highest among those who had chronic respiratory disease and had a longer duration of exposure. In about 30% of the subjects, respiratory symptoms persisted 15-30 days after the accident. Lung function levels were reduced among those who reported high intensity of exposure in comparison to those who reported low exposure, both in children and in adults (forced expiratory volume in one second, FEV1, ml differences: -109 (CI 95%: -310, 93) and -275 (CI 95%: -510, -40). Given high prevalence of potential exposed people, findings from this study should alert public health authority about the possible clinical consequences.

Chlorine: According to Doris J. Rapp, M.D., author of Is This Your Child's World?, exposure to Chlorine in tap water, showers, pool, laundry products, cleaning agents, food processing, sewage systems and many others, can effect health by contributing to asthma, hay fever, anemia, bronchitis, circulatory collapse, confusion, delirium, diabetes, dizziness, irritation of the eye, mouth, nose, throat, lung, skin and stomach, heart disease, high blood pressure and nausea. It is also a possible cause of cancer. Even though you will not see Chlorine on personal care product labels, it is important for you to be aware of the need to protect your skin when bathing and washing your hair.

Take care of the lungs

Chlorine in swimming pools cause damaging effects to the lungs.      Brussels EFE

Chlorine inhalation causes lung damage to children and can develop allergies and asthma, according to a Belgium research study .

The inform establishes for the first time, a direct relation between Chlorine use to disinfect swimming pools and the lungs of children who frequent them.   The Lovaina University experts responsible for this investigation determined that the habitual exposure to Chlorine fumes could provoke an increase in allergies, asthma and even cancer.

“Test show put in evidence a fragility in the barrier that protects the children’s lungs who frequent the swimming pools within scholastic activities” this text informs.   Among the children since the age of three years old who visit the pools the study ads, “The increased permeability is comparable to an adult smokers and something of a little concern”.

The study has been requested by Didier Gosuin, Environmental Minister of Brussels, Belgium regarding the concern of students averaging 10 years old from several schools, and their objective was to evaluate the atmospheric contamination risk among the children who live in the capital.

Gosuin adds to press declarations, the investigations will continue until they clear the exact scope of this finding.   “We do not know yet at what doses these emissions could become dangerous”, according to the Ministry, who has became a supporter regarding taking precautionary measurements as to better the ventilation system of swimming pools and propose that children under six years old do not use the pools.

"Many U.S., European and Canadian Cities are Abandoning the use of Chlorine."   http://www.monitor.net/rachel/r599.html
American water suppliers seem stuck on chlorination as the best way to disinfect drinking water.  However, many European cities, and some Canadian cities, such as Ottawa, have long ago turned away from chlorination in favor of ozonation to disinfect their water.

In recent years, a few smaller American cities have begun to use ozone: Emporia, Kansas and Littleton, Massachusetts, for example.  The Santa Clara Valley Water District in California has announced that it is switching to ozone over the next 5 to 8 years, as has the city of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Chlorine:  A choking agent that irritates the eyes, nose, and respiratory tract. Symptoms of Chlorine poisoning appear as runny nose, coughing, choking, and chest pain. Fluid buildup in the lungs occurs several hours after exposure. Pneumonia can follow.

Dangers of Chlorine

Provided by Jerry Smith, author of "HAARP: The Ultimate Weapon of the Conspiracy"

"Cancer risks among people drinking
Chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain Chlorine ." -- Dr. J.M. Price MD  -  NEW SCIENTIST 18 September 1986 - Ian Anderson

"Studies indicates the suspect to chemicals can also be inhaled and absorbed through the skin during showering and bathing." "Ironically, even the Chlorine widely used to disinfect water produces Carcinogenic traces." "Though 7 out of 10 Americans drink Chlorinated water, its safety over long term is uncertain." "Drinking Chlorinated water may as much as double the risk of Bladder Cancer, which strikes 40,000 people a year."

U.S. NEWS &WORLD REPORT -
July 29 1991
Is Your Water Safe--The
Dangerous State of Your Water
"A long hot shower can be dangerous. The toxic chemicals are inhaled in high concentrations."

Chlorine AND YOUR SHOWER - Bruce Black
"Taking long hot showers is a health risk, according to research presented last week in Anaheim California, at a meeting of the American Chemical Society--and to a lesser extent baths--lead to a greater exposure to toxic chemicals contained in water supplies than does drinking the water. The chemicals evaporate out of the water and are inhaled. They can also spread through the house and be inhaled by others. House holders can receive 6 to 100 times more of the chemical by breathing the air around showers and bath than they would by drinking the water"

BOTTOM LINE/August 87 - Dr. John Andelman, Ph.D..
"On one hand, chlorination has freed civilization form the constant dangers of waterborne epidemics. On the other hand in the mid--70's scientists discovered that chlorination could create carcinogens in water." "80% of the population drinks
Chlorinated water." "There was a higher incidence of cancer of the esophagus, rectum, breast, and larynx and of Hodgkin's Disease among those drinking Chlorinated surface waters." "Volatile organics can evaporate from water in a shower or bath." "Conservative calculations indicate that inhalation exposure can be as significant as exposure from drinking the water, that is, one can be exposed to just as much by inhalation and/or dermal absorption."

IS YOUR WATER SAFE TO DRINK? - Consumer Reports Books
"Skin absorption of contaminant has been underestimated and ingestion may not constitute the sole or even primary route of exposure.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH - Dr.Halina Brown
"Showering is suspected as the primary cause of elevated levels of chloroform in nearly every home because of the
Chlorine in the water."

ENVIROMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY - Dr. Lance Wallace
"A Professor of Water Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh claims that exposure to vaporized chemicals in the water supplies through showering, bathing, and inhalation is 100 times greater than through drinking water." "As
Chlorine is added to kill pathogenic microorganisms, the highly reactive Chlorine combines with fatty acids and carbon fragments to form a variety of toxic compounds, which comprise about 30% of the chlorination by--products." "During the mid-1970's monitoring efforts began to identify widespread toxic contamination of the nation's drinking water supplies, epidemiological studies began to suggest a link between ingestion of toxic chemicals in the water and elevated cancer mortality risks. Since those studies were completed a variety of additional studies have strengthened the statistical connection between consumption of toxins in water and elevated cancer risks. Moreover, this basic concern has been heightened by other research discoveries.

THE NADER REPORT - TROUBLED WATERS ON
TAP
-
Center
For Study of Responsive Law "The National Academy of Science estimate that 200 to 1000 people die in the United States each year from cancers caused by ingesting the contaminants in the water. The major health threat posed by these pollutants is far more likely to be from their inhalations as air pollutants. The reason that emissions are high is that because water droplets dispersed by the shower head have a larger surface--to--value ratio than water streaming into the bath."

SCIENCE NEWS, VOL. 130 - Janet Raloff
"The cause of atherosclerosis and resulting heart attacks and strokes is none other than the ubiquitous
Chlorine in our drinking water."

CHEMISTRY AND CONTROL OF MODERN CHLORINATION - Dr. A.T. Palin, Ph.D..(O.B.E.)
"
Chlorine gas was despicably used during WWI. When the war was over, the use of Chlorine was diverted to poisoning germs in our drinking water. All water supplies throughout the country were Chlorinated . The combination of Chlorine (when in drinking water) and animal fats results in atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and death."

WATER CAN UNDERMINE YOUR HEALTH - Dr. N.W. Walker, D.S.
"Chlorine is the greatest cripple and killer of the modern times. While it prevented epidemics of one disease, it was creating another. Two decades ago, after the start of chlorinating our drinking water in 1904. The present epidemic of the heart trouble, cancer and senility began."

U.S. COUNCIL OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY
"Drinking tap water that is
Chlorinated is hazardous, if not deadly to your health."

HEALTHY WATER FOR A LONGER LIFE - Dr. Martin Fox
"Known carcinogens are found in drinking water as a direct consequences of the practice of chlorination. A long established public health practice for the disinfection of drinking water."

MUNICIPAL ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH LABORATORY - Francis T. Mayo, Director
"
Chlorine is used almost universally in the treatment of public drinking water because of its toxic effect on harmful bacteria and other waterborne, disease-causing organisms. But there is a growing body of scientific evidence that shows that Chlorine in drinking water may actually pose greater long term dangers than those for which it was used to eliminate.

These effects of
Chlorine may result from either ingestion or absorption through skin. Scientific studies have linked Chlorine and chlorination by-products to cancer of the bladder, liver, rectum, and colon, as well as heart disease, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), anemia, high blood pressure, and allergic reactions. There is also evidence that shows that Chlorine can destroy protein in our body and cause adverse effects on skin and hair. The presence of Chlorine in the water may also contribute to the formation of chloramines in the water, which can cause taste and odor problems." "Since Chlorine is required by public health regulations to be present in all public drinking water supplies, it is up to the individual to remove it at the point-of-use in the home." HEALTH EFFECTS OF Chlorine IN DRINKING WATER -
http://www.ewaterfilters.com/chlorine.html
The U.S. General Accounting Office reports that there are serious deficiencies in water treatment plants in 75% of the states. More than 120 million people (about 50% of the population) may get unsafe water according to a study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council.
U.S. Health Officials estimate 900,000 people each year become ill - from waterborne disease. The General Accounting Office estimates 66% of Safe Drinking Water Act violations aren't reported. The contamination of water is directly related to the degree of contamination of our environment. Rainwater flushes airborne pollution from the skies, and then washes over the land before running into the, rivers, aquifers, and lakes that supply our drinking water. Any and all chemicals generated by human activity can and will find their way into water supplies. The chemical element Chlorine is a corrosive, poisonous, greenish-yellow gas that has a suffocating odor and is 2 1/2 times heavier than air. Chlorine belongs to the group of elements called halogens.

The halogens combine with metals to form compounds called halides.
Chlorine is manufactured commercially by running an electric current through salt water. This process produces free Chlorine , hydrogen, and sodium hydroxide. Chlorine is changed to its liquid form by compressing the gas, the resulting liquid is then shipped. Liquid Chlorine is mixed into drinking water and swimming pools to destroy bacteria. Until recently, concerns about drinking water focused on eliminating pathogens. The Chlorine used to reduce the risk of infectious disease may account for a substantial portion of the cancer risk associated with drinking water. Chlorination of drinking water was a major factor in the reduction in the mortality rates associated with waterborne pathogen.

The use of
Chlorine was believed to be safe. This view is evident in an article, which appeared on the back page of the New York Times. The report stated that with the use of Chlorine , "Any municipal water supply can be made as pure as mountain spring water. Chlorination destroys all animal and microbial life, leaving no trace of itself afterwards." This statement reflected opinion accepted until recent years when halogenated organic compounds, such as chloroform, were identified in Chlorinated drinking water supplies. Recent surveys show that these compounds are common in water supplies throughout the United States . These concerns about cancer risks associated with chemical contamination from chlorination by-products have resulted in numerous epidemiological studies.

These studies generally support the notion that by-products of chlorination are associated with increased cancer risks.

"The drinking of
Chlorinated water has finally been officially linked to an increased incidence of colon cancer. An epidemiologist at Oak Ridge Associated Universities completed a study of colon cancer victims and non-cancer patients and concluded that the drinking of Chlorinated water for 15 years or more was conducive to a high rate of colon cancer." Health Freedom News, January/February 1987

"Long-term drinking of
Chlorinated water appears to increase a person's risk of developing bladder cancer as much as 80%," according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Some 45,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with bladder cancer. St. Paul Dispatch & Pioneer Press, December 17, 1987

"Although concentrations of these carcinogens are low...it is precisely these low levels which cancer scientists believe are responsible for the majority of human cancers in the United States." Report Issued By The Environmental Defense Fund

"
Chlorine itself is not believed to be the problem. Scientists suspect that the actual cause of the bladder cancers is a group of chemicals that form as result of reactions between the Chlorine and natural substances and pollutants in the water." (organic matter such as leaves and twigs.) St. Paul Dispatch & Pioneer Press, December 17, 1987

Chlorine was first added to a community water system in 1908 in Chicago and was instrumental in eliminating many types of water-borne disease such as Cholera and Typhoid fever. Prior to chlorination, many major cities had death tolls of 1 in 1000 people from Typhoid alone. Chlorine has been used to disinfect municipal water for over 80 years and has had some positive effects on public health. In the 1970's it was discovered that Chlorine , when added to water, forms Trihalomethanes (Chlorinated by-products) by combining with certain naturally occurring organic matter such as vegetation and algae. In 1992 the American Journal of Public Health published a report that showed a 15% to 35% increase in certain types of cancer for people who consume Chlorinated water. This report also stated that much of these effects were due to showering in Chlorinated water. The National Cancer Institute estimates cancer risks for people who consume Chlorinated water to be 93% higher than for people who do not. The effects of drinking Chlorinated water have been debated for decades. However, most experts now agree that there are some significant risks related to consuming Chlorine and Chlorinated by-products. (www.waterwarning.com)

Chlorinated WATER CAN AFFECT CANCER RISK - Epidemiology 1998;9(1):21-28,
29-35 Lifetime consumption of
Chlorinated tap water can more than double the risk of bladder and rectal cancers in certain individuals, two new studies conclude. Both studies examined the lifetime water-consumption patterns, diets and lifestyles of over 2,200 middle-aged and elderly Iowans suffering from either bladder, colon, or rectal cancers. Those profiles were then compared with those of a pool of nearly 2,000 healthy 'controls'.

Recent research has suggested that
Chlorine reacts with naturally-found organic compounds in water to form what the study authors call "chlorination byproducts." They say many of these byproducts are "mutagenic and/or carcinogenic." The first study found that smoking men who drank Chlorinated tap water for more than 40 years faced double the risk of bladder cancer compared with smoking men who drank Chlorinated water. Women who drank Chlorinated water, on the other hand, had only slightly raised risks for bladder cancers, regardless of (their) smoking status.

The second study found that rates for rectal cancers for both sexes escalated with duration of consumption of
Chlorinated water. Individuals on low-fiber diets who also drank Chlorinated water for over 40 years more than doubled their risk for rectal cancer, compared with lifetime drinkers of non-Chlorinated water.

Similar differences were also found between the risk patterns of
Chlorinated -water drinkers who exercised at least once a week, and those who exercised just once a month, or less. Experts have long recommended regular exercise as one means of reducing one's risk of rectal and other cancers. The study found no link between the long-term consumption of Chlorinated tap water and the incidence of colon cancer. This was not surprising, the researchers explain, since colon tumors have very different patterns of genesis and development compared with rectal tumors.

They speculate that the source of
Chlorinated tap water may help determine its potential to promote cancers. Since surface water (such as that found in lakes and reservoirs) usually contains higher concentrations of organic compounds, the study authors say it is also more likely to contain higher levels of (potentially carcinogenic) chlorination byproducts, compared with water sourced from deep underground.

Dangers of Chlorine

If you are not convinced about the dangers of Chlorine in your tap water, here's an extract from: Dr Z Rona MD MSc "Most people never give it a thought. After all, our elected public officials keep assuring us that Chlorinated city tap water is completely safe for human consumption. Numerous scientific studies report that Chlorinated tap water is a skin irritant and can be associated with rashes like eczema. Chlorinated water can destroy polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E in the body while generating toxins capable of free radical damage (oxidation). This might explain why supplementation of the diet with essential fatty acids like flax seed oil, evening primrose oil, borage oil and antioxidants like vitamin E, selenium and others helps so many cases of eczema and dry skin.

"Chlorinated water destroys much of the intestinal flora, the friendly bacteria that help in the digestion of food and which protects the body from harmful pathogens. These bacteria are also responsible for the manufacture of several important vitamins like vitamin B12 and vitamin K. It is not uncommon for chronic skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, seborrhea and eczema to clear up or to be significantly improved by switching to un-Chlorinated drinking water and supplementing the diet with lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus.

"Chlorinated water contains chemical compounds called trihalomethanes which are carcinogens resulting from the combination of chlorine with compounds in water. These chemicals, also known as organochlorides, do not degrade very well and are generally stored in the fatty tissues of the body (breast, other fatty areas, mother's milk, blood and semen). Organochlorides can cause mutations by altering DNA, suppress immune system function and interfere with the natural controls of cell growth.

"Chlorine has been documented to aggravate asthma, especially in those children who make use of Chlorinated swimming pools. Several studies also link chlorine and Chlorinated by-products to a greater incidence of bladder, breast and bowel cancer as well as malignant melanoma. One study even links the use of Chlorinated tap water to congenital cardiac anomalies.

"Anything you can do to filter tap and shower water that eliminates or even minimizes chlorine would certainly be helpful and possibly curative for some immune system problems. The use of at source water filtration devices is increasingly popular and affordable. Discuss their use with your health care practitioner".

The Dangers of Chlorine

Chlorine: Ubiquitous and Deadly

1/4/01
By Seventh Generation

  • In 1997, The American Public Health Association unanimously passed a resolution urging American industry to stop using the chemical Chlorine .

  • Cancer-causing residue from chlorine-bleaching may be found in products like coffee filters, disposable diapers, paper towels, and bathroom tissue.

  • Dioxin, a chemical byproduct of the manufacturing of chlorine-bleached paper, is believed to be the single most carcinogenic chemical known to science.

  • Dioxin has been linked to endometriosis, immune system impairment, diabetes, neurotoxicity, birth defects (including fetal death), decreased fertility, testicular atrophy, and reproductive dysfunction in both women and men.

  • Chlorine vapors can irritate your lungs and pose a serious risk to people who suffer from asthma and other lung problems.

  • When you open the door of your dishwasher after washing, toxic volatized chlorine from dish detergent and tap water is released into the air.

  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has found dioxin to be 300,000 times more potent as a carcinogen than DDT.

  • Every year, between five and ten million poisonings are caused by household cleaning products containing toxic ingredients like chlorine.

  • Studies show that forty to seventy percent of the dioxin in bleached coffee filters can leach into your coffee; dioxin found in paper milk cartons also leaches into the milk you drink.

  • Thanks to Chlorine pollution, Americans ingest a daily amount of dioxin that is already 300 to 600 times greater than the EPA's so-called "safe" dose.

  • Pregnant women in their first trimester who drink five or more glasses of Chlorinated tap water a day may be at a much higher risk of miscarriage than women who drink non-Chlorinated water.

  • Cancer-causing chemicals like Chlorine found in many household products are readily absorbed through the skin.
